ALEXANDRIA, IN- Donald J. Warner, 86, of Alexandria passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017 at IU Health-Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after a brief illness. Don was a lifelong resident of Alexandria. He was born on Feb. 20, 1931 to Charles and Gertrude (Robertson) Warner and was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1949.
He served in the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran. Don returned from his military service and spent his life on the family farm.
Don was involved with farming and raising livestock throughout his life. He began raising his own livestock as a child, which enabled him to save enough money to help purchase the family farm in 1948 at age 17. Don loved animals of all kinds and continued to raise rabbits, chickens, pigeons, and doves for over 60 years - a hobby he shared with his childhood friend Marvin Trice.
A lifelong tinkerer, Don enjoyed working with his hands. He started motorizing bicycles as a child and went on to have many motorbikes throughout his life. From his childhood Whizzer to his Harley-Davidson and his many Model A Fords and farm tractors, Don had a love of machinery & mechanics. He worked at Haynes Stellite, Warner Gear, Johns Manville, and Anaconda, and retired from Guide Lamp in 1989.
Don followed boxing his whole life and also enjoyed mowing, cruising around Alex, and snacking on popcorn and ice-cream with Georganna, his wife of 61 years.
